As part of the City of Leuven's celebration of the 500th anniversary of the publication of Thomas More's Utopia, and as part of 30CC's 'Amateurama' festival, Trivial Muffins has partnered with the concert band ‘Koninklijke Harmonie Volharding Kessel-Lo’ to produce A Man for All Seasons. Written in 1960 by the British screenwriter Robert Bolt (Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago), the play is based on the true story of Thomas More, Lord Chancellor to King Henry VIII, and his political adversary, Thomas Cromwell. The 1500s were difficult times, marked by social, political, and religious upheaval, with the rise of Protestantism across Europe and its influence on the court of Henry VIII. When England's King, still without a son and heir to his throne, is refused an annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, he makes himself head of the Church of England, in direct political opposition to Pope Clement VII. Thomas More, a man of great spiritual fidelity, finds his loyalties at odds as he faces an unimaginable matter of conscience: will he support the choice of his King? or will he remain steadfast in his Catholic faith? Thomas More is, in his own words, 'the king's good servant, but God's first.'
